CHARACTER: CANON SECTION
NAME: Dia Kurosawa
AGE: 18 as of January 1st
CANON: Love Live! School Idol Festival

CANON HISTORY:
CANON PERSONALITY: Dia Kurosawa is a dignified, proud young woman born to an old family with traditional values. She's has a fiery temper and presents herself assertively; but she's also very classy and speaks formally. She does not tolerate sloppiness or imperfection, and can be quite picky when things aren't done properly; combine that with her hard-working nature, and she makes for the ideal Student Council President.

It's why she initially turns down Chika's proposal to form a school idol club at their school: there weren't enough members, they didn't have a solid plan...and at some point, once the club was established (which was out of Dia's control), they had made a fool of themselves, much to Dia's chagrin. Logically, her harsh attitude towards the club made sense, but there was a lot more to why she was so adamant towards the club.

Behind Dia's calm, somewhat cold demeanor is something deeper, rooted in her history that plays an integral role in her high school life: Dia is, in reality, extremely knowledgable about school idols, particularly the group μ's, which is the most renowned school idol groups of all time. She practically worships μ's and believes that no other group could be as great as them. Dia and her sister, Ruby, once fawned over school idols and dreamt of becoming ones themselves. While Dia was able to make her dream a reality, after her three-man idol group with her two childhood friends, Kanan and Mari, crashed and burned on stage, her dream went along with them...for more than half of the season.

In the first eight episodes, Dia is unable to let go of the past, which holds her back from following her real passion to become a school idol. She hates failure and even discourages Ruby from becoming a school idol so she wouldn't experience the same tragedy Dia did. While she doesn't bother to stop the girls from participating in a singing event in Tokyo, she warns Mari about their participation, bringing up the past and saying that Mari knows very well what will happen if they fail. This is the driving factor behind Dia's cold attitude towards Aqours: she knows how painful failure is and doesn't want the girls to experience the same thing.

Despite this, however, Dia still allows Ruby to become a school idol of her own choosing, showing that she cares a lot about her younger sister. She becomes a lot more gentle towards Ruby and drops the tough-girl act, as seen in this clip here. Before Dia joins Aqours, when Ruby worries about Dia being bothered about her being a school idol, Dia reassures her and tells her that it shouldn't matter what anyone else thinks, and even apologizes for giving Ruby a hard time. This shows that even though Dia was against being a part of the school idol club, she respected her sister's wishes, showing that she is capable of being selfless to tend to those she cares about. In Season 2, Dia also shows support for Ruby when Ruby expresses insecurity over being a school idol without Dia. She tells Ruby that she'd accomplished so much, and that her accomplishments make Dia happy, too. They've come a long way since Season 1, and it's clear that Dia takes pride in Ruby being her younger sister.

Another example of her selflessness is shown in her friendship with Kanan and Mari. It's revealed that their idol group disbanded because Kanan didn't sing when they went to perform in Tokyo. Initially, the audience is lead to believe that the reason behind their failure in Tokyo was because they were overwhelmed by the other groups' performances before theirs, and Kanon froze up on stage. In reality, Kanan didn't sing because she didn't want Mari to perform with an injury. Thus, Kanan quit being a school idol to so Mari wouldn't turn down other opportunities because of their idol life, and Dia followed Kanan's decision. This shows that Dia was concerned for Mari's well-being and was willing to drop everything she cared about for Mari's 'own good'. Dia also refused to disclose the real reason why they disbanded until the time was right.

Furthermore, even though Dia had been harsh towards the school idol club before she joined, she always worried about the group and did little things that helped them succeed. In episode 3, Dia turned on a backup generator when the power went out during Aqours' first performance. Also, in episode 8, when the girls were disappointed that they did not receive any points in their first Tokyo performance, Dia comforted them and reassured them that they did not fail, despite her own past.

She's also not without her own insecurities, too. Dia felt left out when the first and second years referred to Mari and Kanan with the "-chan" suffix, but still used "-san" with Dia. She felt as though she was distant from the other members and tried to change her demeanor to bond with them. It was also revealed at this time that Dia was distant from others her age while growing up because she was always the mature, responsible one. However, the members ultimately told her that Dia didn't have to change one bit for their sake, and that they admired her for her personality.

Dia's also the one who came up with the name "Aqours" for the group. She wrote it in the sand while the girls were figuring out a name, but ran away immediately when she heard them coming closer, not wanting them to know it was her. This was also the name of the three-man group Dia, Kanan, and Mari formed in the past.

After the conflict between the three of them is solved, they all join the club--Aqours--together and reaffirm their friendship. From then on, Dia is fully devoted to Aqours, even setting a rigorous training schedule for them during summer vacation so they can prepare for the Love Live! competition. She still retains the hard-working, mature personality she has from the beginning of the series, but she has a lot more energy and enthusiasm now that she's in a school idol group. More importantly, she's able to move on from the past and seek a new future with Aqours.
SKILLS/ABILITIES:
Singing/Dancing: Necessary skills to be an idol, of course! Personally, I wouldn't say Dia is the best singer in the group but she can certainly keep up with the others both in vocals and in choreography.

Stamina: Also necessary to become an idol. Dia is physically fit and puts in ample time into training to keep up her endurance.

Leadership: One of Dia's biggest strengths is in her leadership capabilities. While she's quite harsh and loud and stubborn, she always tries to do what's best for the cause. She can also be flexible when need be, especially when other people's feelings are involved!

CHARACTER: AU SECTION
AU NAME: Dia Kurosawa
AU AGE: 18
PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES: Brown eyes. She doesn't have her hairpins in Recolle, either.

AU HISTORY: I have permission from the players of the other characters mentioned!

- Dia was born to two Japanese parents. Her mother died when she was younger, and her father remarried. The marriage gave Dia a step-sibling named Olivia Rose. Olivia and Dia had a good relationship while they grew up together, and Olivia's determination and strong will is what inspired Dia to take after her older sister in that regard.

- While she was growing up, Dia would do a lot of household chores such as hanging the laundry. One day while she was pinning clothes to the clothesline, a pair of boxers flew over the fence straight into her face from next door. Dia looked behind the fence to see a young boy, one who was a little older than her named Sakichi Nijima. And...that's the story of how Dia and Sakichi became childhood friends.

- She started taking swimming lessons when she was 7 years old. She immediately fell in love with the sport and decided to dedicate a good portion of her time to it outside of her lessons to practice and get better at it. Swimming became Dia's passion, among other things...

- ...such as idols. Dia's first celebrity crush was on a member of a popular Japanese girl group. She admired her for her dance moves, her beautiful voice...and it was this idol who got Dia into hell the idol world. Her mother said that sort of music was "trash", though, so she decided to keep her adoration a secret and would watch idols on tv when her mother wasn't home, sometimes with Olivia as well. She also taught herself how to sing at least decently on her own growing up by copying other idols and watching Youtube tutorials. Swimming took up too much of her time to get formal voice training.

- Then suddenly, Olivia made the decision to go off to the military. Her mother got extremely upset and refused to speak with her, even as Olivia left. Dia, though, was devastated. She and Olivia were extremely close, and to not have her older sister in her life made her feel lost and lonely. She was by herself at home, didn't have anyone to talk to at home, so she often visited Sakichi, and wound up devoting most of her time at home to her studies. Dia was careful not to bring up Olivia's name around her mother, much to her dismay.

- Similarly, Sakichi also left for the military once he graduated high school. Dia felt even more alone without her best friend. However, she would take solace in the determination and the strength that Olivia gave her, and she decided to end her loneliness by making more friends on her own. However, she still kept in touch with Sakichi by writing letters to him...which inevitably stopped reaching him once Recolle's mail system went haywire.

- When Dia went on to high school, she joined the swim team. Dia found a role model in her captain, Korra Salman, who broke records and earned many trophies. As a result, Dia worked hard and earned her rightful place as the swim team captain during her senior year of high school. She also took on extracurricular activities, such as joining the handicrafts club and a community service club. She also invested a lot of time into choir and auditioned/will audition for the school musical. Somehow, she's also managing to be a stellar student, too. I don't know how she does it, either, but Dia gets very stressed and is often seen with bags under her eyes when she isn't wearing makeup. Someone save her.

- She wants to attend Recolle University in the fall and pursue a degree in Pharmacology. A lot of her taking on a lot is because she wants to have a good resume. As a result, though, her work-life balance is awful, and Dia's already drinking a lot of coffee to keep herself going throughout the day.

AU PERSONALITY:

Much like her canon self, Dia is extremely hardworking and puts her best foot forward in everything she does. However, she has taken on a lot more in Recolle, overloading herself with schoolwork and activities. She's got almost no time to hang out with her friends outside of class and puts her drive to succeed over camaraderie (except when it comes to Sakichi) in that regard, which probably makes her seem more distant to her classmates.

Especially because of how she is towards the swim team as their captain. One thing that's carried over from canon is that Dia is a perfectionist and really pushes people to their limits. She's quite notorious for being harsh on her teammates and may be known as a Dragon Lady or something to that extent; however, this creates a juxtaposition to how she is outside of the pool, because Dia's a real sweetheart and much less strict in just about every other environment.

The biggest reason why Dia works hard and strives for perfection is because Olivia herself was very driven. Dia looked up to her and wanted to be like her--still does--and in a lot of situations where she's struggling, she thinks, What would Olivia do? and uses that as motivation to push forward. Dia...tends to overdo it sometimes and tries too hard, especially with the swim team, but she means well and hopefully the team sees results.

Her mother sort of put a hamper on Dia's idol dreams, though. In canon, Dia wanted to become a school idol out of her own will, but had her dreams crushed because of a decision she and Kanan decided to make for Mari's sake. Here in Recolle, her mother can't stand Dia's idol obsession because she views it as a distraction. To some extent, Dia agrees with her, and has put idols on hold to focus on school, but her love for them still remains and acts as an inspiration for her to get better at singing while she's in her choir classes.

Dia has many role models in her life, from Olivia to Korra to her idol groups. She admires people who can press forward and stay strong in the face of adversity, people with great resolve and unwavering determination. Whenever Dia is in a bad place, she looks to them for guidance so she can keep on moving. In canon, Dia was the older sibling and had to be the role model for Ruby; here in Recolle, Dia has a lot of older, more experienced figures to look up to and isn't forced to be in that grownup role like she is in canon. Therefore, she struggles a lot more, and tries a little too hard to be like those she admires. What Dia needs to do here in Recolle is find herself and stop trying so hard to be like other people.
